Sketches
I think about my posture the most when I’m playing cello. I explored a range of side and front profiles and learned about joinery possibilities to figure out how to make it all come together. Before moving to prototyping, I modeled my design in Solidworks to help visualize the assembly.
Process
At the wood shop I picked out a beautiful board of Walnut with an eye that would become part of the seat.
After cutting pieces to size, I used the chop saw, table saw, jigsaw, hand router, and chisels to finish shaping.
For the assembly, I used lap, biscuit, mortise and tenon joints to bring the base together and dowels with glue for the back piece.
I got confirmation from my cello teacher that it felt like a cello chair (without being prompted!).
